BLIND AS A BAT, WE FIND WAYS TO EXIST

JULY 3, 2013

you’re stronger
these days
than
you’ve been in your life.

when they ask you,
but how?
you’ll respond:
i don’t think about it.

food still
tastes the same;
windows and doors
open and
close;
music plays; days pass
slowly
or quickly as they
always have.
you still
wash your hands
before most meals.

eventually, some mirror
will say what
you have
yet to admit,
only softly - by
the luck of a shadow, by
the cut of your jaw;
by the glint of defiance, or
a grin.

you’ll be surprised
just like
every time; and then,
minutes later,
forget.
